Lymphatic drainage and lymphedema in Medellín

Lymphedema is a lymph buildup that can swell an arm, a leg, or another area. At Esencial we treat it as part of integral physiotherapy, after an assessment. Manual lymphatic drainage and pressotherapy are used when the case allows; they are not a spa massage or a “detox” product.

Who it is for

  • Swelling that stays, changes through the day, or appeared after surgery.
  • Heaviness, tight skin, or clothes that no longer fit on one side.
  • A clinical indication for lymphatic drainage or pressotherapy after assessment—not a trend or “drops”.

How the assessment works

  1. 01

    First, understand the swelling

Not every swelling is lymphedema. We ask about surgeries, infections, travel, medications, and how the volume changes.

  2. 02

    Exam and plan

We check the area, the skin, and movement. If indicated, the plan may include manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and sometimes pressotherapy.

  3. 03

    What we do not do

We do not promise to “erase” lymphedema in a fixed number of sessions. We also do not replace oncology follow-up or your physician’s judgment.

How pressotherapy fits

Pressotherapy may support fluid return when the physiotherapist indicates it. It has contraindications. If you are searching “pressotherapy Medellín”, read that page too and book an assessment.

Red flags

Seek emergency or medical care immediately if you notice:

  • Sudden swelling of one leg with pain, warmth, or shortness of breath (possible thrombosis).
  • Fever, spreading redness, or skin that becomes very hot (possible infection).
  • An open wound, discharge, or skin that breaks easily.
  • Swelling with chest pain, fainting, or sudden facial swelling.
