How many physiotherapy sessions do I need? What it depends on

There is no magic number: how many physiotherapy sessions you need depends on your problem, your goals and how you respond. Here is what it depends on.
Short answer: it depends. The number of physiotherapy sessions cannot honestly be known before you are assessed: it changes according to what you have, how long you have had it, whether you had surgery, your goals and how you respond to the plan. Be wary of magic numbers. The responsible approach is an assessment, a stage-based plan with clear goals, and reassessments to decide whether you continue, space out sessions or finish.
Why is there no fixed number of sessions?
Two people with the same diagnosis can progress differently. In addition, Law 528 of 1999, which regulates physiotherapy in Colombia, states that the duty to provide care does not entail a commitment to guarantee results (text of the law). That is why, instead of a number, we give you criteria.
Factors that influence how many sessions you need
| Factor | Tends to need a shorter process | Tends to need a longer process |
|---|---|---|
| How long you have had it | Recent problem | Pain for months or years, repeated episodes |
| Type of problem | Overload or mild discomfort | Tissue injury (tendon, ligament), surgery, a problem affecting several areas |
| Surgery | No surgery | Post-operative: follows the stages and healing times set by your surgeon |
| Goal | Getting back to daily activities | Returning to a demanding sport or physical job |
| Adherence | You do your home exercises and adjust habits | Difficulty following the plan at home |
| General factors | Good sleep, prior physical activity | Other health conditions, stress, little rest |
Frequency by stage (general guide)
| Stage | What happens | How frequency usually changes |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Assessment, pain management, learning key exercises | Sessions closer together |
| Progression | Gaining mobility, strength and confidence | Stays the same or starts to space out |
| Independence | Maintaining progress with your home program | Sessions further apart, check-ins |
| Discharge | Goals met and a plan to prevent relapses | End of the process or occasional check-ins |
The specific frequency is agreed with you based on your case, your schedule and your budget.
How to tell if you are on the right track
- Your pain becomes more predictable and manageable.
- You gain mobility, strength or tolerance for your activities.
- You can do things that used to be hard (sleeping, working, climbing stairs, training).
- If reassessments show no progress, the plan is reconsidered or we advise you to see a doctor.
When to see a doctor instead of adding more sessions
- Pain that gets progressively worse despite treatment.
- Loss of strength or sensation, changes in bladder or bowel control.
- Fever, unexplained weight loss, or severe night pain that does not change with position.

Frequently asked questions
How many physiotherapy sessions do I need? There is no number that works for everyone. It depends on the problem, how long you have had it, whether you had surgery, your goals and how you respond. After the assessment we give you a realistic plan that is adjusted at each reassessment. Why can't you give me an exact number of sessions from the start? Because response to treatment is individual. Law 528 of 1999 states that the physiotherapist's duty does not imply guaranteeing results; promising a fixed number without assessing you would not be prudent. How often should I go to physiotherapy? It is usually more frequent at the beginning, when you need more guidance and pain management, and is spaced out as you become more independent with your home exercises. Frequency is agreed with you based on your case, your schedule and your budget. How do I know if physiotherapy is working? Specific criteria are reviewed: pain, mobility, strength, ability to do your activities and your own perception. If there is no progress, the plan is reconsidered or you are advised to see a doctor. Does Esencial sell session packages? We do not work with fixed packages: the plan is adjusted to your progress. Do home exercises reduce the number of sessions? Doing the prescribed exercises is a central part of treatment and can help you progress more independently; even so, the outcome depends on each case.
